A new jukebox musical based on the life and works of Tina Turner is currently in development and is expected to reach the West End shortly following a series of workshops and readings. Produced by Stage Entertainment this jukebox musical is written by Katori Hall and dramatises her life story set to a familiar soundtrack of hit songs which include “What’s Love Got to Do?”, “Proud Mary”, “River Deep Mountain High” and “Simply the Best”.
Director Phyllida Lloyd is currently attached to Tina the Musical alongside other creative team members, set and costume designer Mark Thompson, choreographer Anthony van Laast and musical supervisor Nicholas Skilbeck. A London workshop was held on 16 December 2016 and was attended by Turner herself who commented: “I am delighted to be able to share our news as we begin the next chapter of our journey. It has been wonderful to collaborate with Katori and Phyllida and to have my story nurtured by such an amazing creative team is thrilling. London has always had a very special place in my heart and it’s wonderful to be back.”
It has been confirmed that Tina the Musical will run at the Aldwych Theatre from 21st March.
Tina Turner was born Anna Mae Bullock on 26 November 1939 in Nutbush, Tennessee. She obtained Swiss citizenship in 2013 and currently lives in Küsnacht, Switzerland. She shot to fame in the mid-1950s singing with Ike Turner’s Kings of Rhythm, originally under the name “Little Ann.” She became Tina Turner in 1960 and began the Ike & Tina Turner Revue with hits such as “River Deep – Mountain High”, “Proud Mary” and “Nutbush City Limits”. She has since spoken openly about being a victim of domestic abuse and split from Ike in 1976.
Rebuilding her career in the 1980s her hits included “Let’s Stay Together” followed by the 1984 release of her fifth solo album Private Dancer, from which the lead single “What’s Love Got to Do with It” went on to win three Grammy Awards including Record of the Year. She becomes widely known for singing the Bond Theme “Golden Eye” and starred on film in the 1975 rock musical ‘Tommy’, ‘Mad Max Beyond Thunderdome’ and ‘Last Action Hero’.
Tina Turner’s story has previously been presented in the film ‘What’s Love Got to Do with It?’ directed by Brian Gibson. Released in 1993 it starred Angela Bassett as Tina Turner and Laurence Fishburne as Ike Turner. The stage musical Soul Sister was devised by John Miller and Pete Brooks and produced by Bill Kenwright and John Miller. It ran at The Hackney Empire in 2012 before transferring to the West End’s Savoy Theatre where it was nominated for an Olivier Award.
From humble beginnings in Nutbush, Tennessee, to her transformation into the global Queen of Rock ‘n’ Roll, Tina Turner didn’t just break the rules, she rewrote them. This new stage musical reveals the untold story of a woman who dared to defy the bounds of her age, gender and race.
One of the world’s best-selling artists of all time, Tina Turner has won 11 Grammy Awards and her live shows have been seen by millions, with more concert tickets sold than any other solo performer in music history.
Featuring her much loved songs, TINA – The Tina Turner Musical is written by Olivier Award-winning playwright Katori Hall and directed by the internationally acclaimed Phyllida Lloyd.
